2.1 – explain how children and young people’s development is influenced by a range of personal factors. Factors that can affect children and young people during pregnancy: •Alcohol and smoking can affect children during pregnancy because it can affect their mental and physical development •The food you eat whilst pregnant can affect the child as it goes from you to the baby through the umbilical cord. •If you take drugs when pregnant then they also go through the umbilical cord to the child. Personal and external factors that affect development:

Influences before and at birth – if you problems with the lack of oxygen if the baby is born prematurely or has the cord round its neck or if the baby was born in a awkward position then the injuries that it gets can affect it.

Health – if a child has to spend time outside of school because they are in hospital then it can affect their development at school also if they have to take regular trips to the doctor it can have the same affect.

Disability – if a child is disabled then they may not be able to take part in important activities at school or at home. Which can affect the child’s development and self esteem.

External factors such as:

Poverty- if they cannot afford the essentials in life then they may miss out for example if they can’t afford the essentials for school then it could lead to them missing out on trips which can also affect their social development.

family - drug/alcohol/abuse at home – if there’s a drug problem at home then it can be difficult for the child to cope and have money problems, if you have parents that are divorced/separated then it can have an emotional impact on the child and can feel isolated which could lead to them having problems at school.

Children in care – if a child has been brought up in care then they may have had an rough upbringing and have difficulty relating to people which can mean they have problems working with others.
