INTRODUCTION TO GLAXOSMITHKLINE
GlaxoSmithKline is a global business that provides a service to millions of people. They are a science led company that create a wide variety of medicines to help people live longer and better lives. They have research centres in the UK, USA, Spain, Belgium and China they use these centres to create new medicines. 
SERVICES & PRODUCTS OFFERED
GlaxoSmithKline provide a service to millions of people all over the world by creating medicines that save lives. Some of the drugs that they create are used as prescription drugs, and some are vaccines. They also provide products that aren’t medicines such as Lucozade, Ribena and Horlicks. Other than this they provide things to help with oral care, dermatological care, respiratory care, gastrointestinal care, eye care and also pain relief. They provide lots of products for each of these categories. For example they make Aquafresh tooth paste and Odol toothpaste which are both classed under oral care. These products all offer a medicinal value, but are no commercially offered as a medicine. Some of the medicines that are made by GlaxoSmithKline are very important and have saved millions of lives. An example of this would be the vast amount of vaccines they produce. More than 30 vaccines are made and used worldwide to help prevent life threatening diseases such as hepatitis A, hepatitis B, diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, measles, mumps, rubella, polio, typhoid, influenza and bacterial meningitis. All of these vaccines would be checked thoroughly and would have researched for years and some that years of research have gone into don’t make it onto the market because they are unsafe for humans to consume.
TYPE OF WORK THAT TAKES PLACE
GlaxoSmithKline’s work mostly consists of research. But along with the research come a lot of long hard steps that require a vast amount of skills and takes a lot of time. On the website it says that out of every 5000 chemicals they test only one could possibly be appropriate to use. Along with research comes a lot of testing. Some testing is done in labs by humans but they have equipment like robotics to carry out procedures as well. Although the robotics will be expensive they are a lot safer to use. With robotics there is a lot of time saved because they can multi task where a human cant, they can also deal with a lot more quantity than a human. Another thing is that robotics are more hygienic, this is because they do not exert anything that could potentially contaminate anything. These things are all positive, but of course there is a chance of the machine malfunctioning and creating problems in the lab. Other work they do involves marketing, because they make more than just medicines they have a lot of business work that takes place to advertise their products. They also have to make things like packaging for their products, these parts of work are not scientific but still take place.  & 
An example of a vaccine that GlaxoSmithKline make is the influenza vaccine.
They create the vaccine using chicken eggs, and a lot of effort goes into preparing the eggs and manufacturing the vaccine.
The process starts even before the eggs reach the lab, on the way to the lab from the farm the eggs are tightly monitored and kept at a certain temperature which is between 32-35oC. The temperature is kept the same upon arrival to the lab and they are stored overnight.
The first thing they do when they collect the egg is the inoculation, which is when they put the specific strain of virus into the egg. After that they incubate the eggs, which mean they store them at a specific heat to allow the virus to multiply. That is an extremely important step because it is needed to make sure they can provide sufficient quantities of the vaccine. When the multiplication of the virus is complete they harvest them, removing the virus from the egg.
