The purpose of this paper is to identify the obstacles Harley-Davidson faced in 2007, going into a looming recession. It was found that Harley-Davidson has become very resourceful, and forged many key alliances since its many years in operation. In addition to the measures that Harley-Davidson took to survive a recession, while increasing productivity, additional steps could have been taken to gain a stronger financial position. Harley-Davidson is an American motorcycle company that has been in existence for more than 100 years. The company was founded in a small backyard shed by William Harley and Arthur Davidson, in an attempt to build their own motorcycles (Hunger, Wheeler, 2012). The company has undergone many changes with each change in ownership. Harley-Davidson currently has the majority of the market cornered in the U.S. for heavyweight motorcycles. In 1998 Harley-Davidson owned most of the share of stock in Buell Motorcycles. By obtaining Buell, Harley has the ability to compete with foreign producers in the sport bike segment (Hunger, Wheeler, 2012).
