Herbal Medicine, sometimes referred to as Herbalism or Botanical Medicine, is the use of herbs for their therapeutic or medicinal value. An herb is a plant or plant part valued for its medicinal, aromatic or savoury qualities. Herb plants produce and contain a variety of chemical substances that act upon the body. Herbal medicine is the oldest form of healthcare known to mankind. Herbs had been used by all cultures throughout history. It was an integral part of the development of modern civilization.
Now days, many chemically mixed or processed medicines have arrived in the field of medicine. Still some people trust the use and efficiency of herbal medicines. People tend to use the “Natural” way of curing one’s sicknesses or diseases. Those herbal medicines have been used traditionally to help cure illnesses, diseases, and some ailments. As time pass by, the availability of herbal medicines is getting wide and is being used in the field of medicine and one of them is the Lagundi.
Lagundi is a shrub that grows in the Philippines. It is an herbal medicine known to heal cough, colds and other common respiratory illnesses. Studies have shown that Lagundi can prevent the body’s production of Leukotines which are released during an asthma attack. Modern-day use takes advantage of the plant’s antitussive and anti-inflammatryo properties. The antitussive and anti-asthma effects of Lagundi are attributed to its anti-inflammatory acitivity. Not only the plant itself is useful but also its every part is being used in the field of medicine.
Plant is considered anti-inflammatory. The leaves, bark, roots, flowers, fruits and seeds of Lagundi are used for medicinal purpose by Filipino traditional healers. The leaves are considered aromatic, bitter, anti-inflammatory, bronchial smooth muscle relaxant, lactagogue, emmenagogue, insecticide, and vermifuge.
