Maternity leave in the UK is a disadvantage to women in their workplaces

Maternity Leave is a leave taken by pregnant women from work to have a baby. Either paid or unpaid leave. Every female employer is entitled to take this leave before, at, and after the time that she gives birth or adopts a child. This implies that every new mother should be entitled to maternity leave irrespective of employer’s terms or conditions in order to take care of herself and that of the child. Maternity leave for women in the work place at the United Kingdom has been enabled by law of which employers are mandated to comply. The law states that every woman is entitled to 26 weeks or 52 weeks of maternity leave and 90perent of their salary for the first 26 weeks at the work place depending on how long they have worked and how much they earn. Pregnant employee’s have four legal rights including paid time off for antenatal care, Statutory maternity leave, statutory maternity pay and protection against unfair treatment, discrimination or dismissal. Some do argue that this law in a way has not gone down well for women at work place. (gov.uk, 2013) This essay will look at some reasons why maternity leave is a drawback for women at work places, analyse the pros and cons of the reasons and also discuss the whether it is based on facts or emotions. The requirement for employer’s to allow maternity leave under United Kingdom law is disadvantage to woman in the work place because some employers think it affect the effectiveness and efficiency of the mother’s input to the work which ends up affecting the output or production of the work or services, not forgetting the health condition of the mother and the child as well as the family stability. Yes it is very true that business are meant for profit, development and growth but that should not negatively influence the basic human right, social norms, values and standard or even morals to respect the right of women.
