Reflection Paper on Nutrirtion During Pregnancy

We all know that proper nutrition is very important during pregnancy because it does not only affect the health of the mother but also the health of the baby. During the mother’s class the foods that mother’s should eat were discussed. In the Philippines in which economic matters greatly affect the choice of pregnant mother. The mother’s class offers alternative foods that are available locally and cheap but provides the necessary nutrients and vitamins needed by the mother. There is evidence that maternal weight gain during pregnancy influences birth weight. It was recommended that weight gain of 25 to 35 lb (11.5 to 16 kg) for women with a normal prepregnancy body mass index (BMI). The mother’s class not only benefits the mother’s during that time but also us medical students. The mother’s class thought us how to advice mother’s during consultation about their nutrition. In general I learned to advise the pregnant woman to eat what she wants in amounts she desires and salted to taste. And in socioeconomically deprived women, we should make sure that there is ample food to eat. I had also learned that it is necessary to periodically explore food intake by dietary recall to discover the occasional nutritionally absurd diet. In addition I had also learned that it is necessary to give tablets of simple iron salts that provide at least 27 mg of iron daily and folate supplementation before and in the early weeks of pregnancy. Indeed the mother’s class is very fruitful.


During the mother’s class I’ve learned that it is not necessary for the pregnant woman to limit exercise, provided she does not become excessively fatigued or risk injury. In addition, pregnant women actually improved their metabolic efficiency during exercise.
