Remember 9/11

This is a picture of people walking through the "Empty Sky" memorial dedicated to the victims of the attack on the World Trade Center at Liberty State Park in Jersey City. It was taken this year, the eleventh anniversary of the 9/11 attack. That being the case, it is easy to assume that the audience this image is intended to impact are the citizens of the United States. The main focus of this picture is the people in the middle of the walls and the rays of sunshine going across. The main idea or purpose of this picture Walker 2

is to appeal to emotions and bring back memories of that fatal day.
The way the photographer was positioned made the shot have a three-dimensional aspect. The walls start out looking as if they are right next to you and proportioned, then they begin to narrow to the edge. This is an excellent technique because it puts more focus on the people at the end of the ally-way as well as provides a color contrast between the vast amount of black wall and the small amount of bright sunshine. This puts more emphasis on the arc of sunshine which in turn highlights the silhouetted people. The viewer really gets a sense that they are walking in the memorial themselves. Thus letting the image have even more of an impact on the emotions of the viewer.

To analyze this photo even further, we can look at the attitude and metaphorical symbols that it possesses. The people in the center of the photo and the words along the walls serve as a reminder of those families that were left behind after the attack. The blackness of the walls and the focus on only some of the inscribed names eludes to the darkness of that day and how now many of the lives lost have been forgotten.
